Coulter at UConn

Wow, talk about a war of ideas. My favorite part:

“Eric Knudsen, a 19-year-old sophomore journalism and social welfare major at UConn, didn't attend the speech.
"We encourage diverse opinion at UConn, but this is blatant hate speech," said Knudsen, head of Students Against Hate.”

Now, I read Ann, recreationally, but don’t take her too incredibly seriously; kind of like liberals and E.J. Dionne (note to humor impaired, that was a joke)  That said, she gets a worse rap than she deserves.  Another problem I have with the undergraduate left is the need to protest absolutely everything, and waste other people’s money in the process. The basic statement is “we don’t like what you’re saying, and not only do we not want to hear it, we don’t want anyone else to either” and that, my friends, is absolute b.s.

I'm not a Coulter fan by any means. But people do get entirely too upset over her. She's an entertainer, and she's got a shtick, and her shtick is ripping liberals (and it's supposed to be comedic). Here's a novel idea. If you don't like her and she comes to your school, don't go! Or, perhaps, go, and then argue with her in the question section. Because if you are really correct, and she really is a hate-mongering lie-spewing Michael Moore, then you should have absolutely no trouble defeating her in debate, because you have the TRUTH on your side. But personally, I'd reccomend not going or at most protesting outside the door. Shutting down events (a sore subject round here) is pretty reprehensible, especially for a person like Coulter, who just eats that up. Everytime this happens, she makes some money on the intolerance of the liberals.

The sad thing is she used to be much better, more substantial, and soforth. Unfortunately she hit on the present shtick, and it works, it sells her books, so she has no reason to move past it.

As for wasting money, I neglected to mention that her speaking fee is in the neighborhood of twenty thousand dollars, not cheap.

For my part, my favorite female political commentator is Peggy Noonan, who has a great column up this week on the WSJ's OpinionJournal site on illegal immigration. www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan
