SCOTUS New Year!

Chief Justice Roberts’ first year end report is out, apparently he sent it as an email attachment, the first time that’s ever been done.  Makes me wonder if any of the other justices actually saw it.  The big issue?  Money, specifically the rent the judiciary pays to the GSA and (low) salaries for federal judges.  For some reason CJ Roberts cites preservation of judicial independence as the key reason a salary increase is needed, but I suspect he does so only because talking about judicial independence is fashionable, while saying “it just plain sucks that I only get $211,000 a year” is not.  Makes me wonder, what kind of salary did Roberts walk away from when he was first put on the bench?  Any speculation, guesses, etc…?
